The Marketing and Communications Specialist will perform responsible professional work as part of a multimedia team that plans and executes strategic marketing and communications for the Town, both internal and external, while creating a consistent citizen experience that aligns with the Town's overall goals, master plans, and Cary Community Plan. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Marketing Manager.


Typical Tasks

·          Works in collaboration with cross-functional teams across the Town to coordinate, write, and edit marketing materials including digital media, social media, email, SMS, and print media including brochures, flyers, advertisements, video, and news releases

·          Develop, execute, and evaluate marketing and communication plans for Town initiatives, events, festivals, programs and awareness campaigns

·          Plan, write, edit, publish, monitor, and evaluate social media content including campaigns, events, and interactive posts

·          Utilize social media management and social listening tools to create social campaigns and increase engagement

·          Help execute citizen engagement strategy focusing on creating a citizen-first approach

·          Research, write, edit, and distribute news releases, media advisories, public service announcements and respond to media inquiries

·          Monitor and report on media coverage of Town issues, events, and initiatives

·          Generate and evaluate content ideas and requests from staff according to Town goals, initiatives, and standard procedures

·          Email marketing coordination including planning, writing, scheduling, and monitoring campaigns

·          Assist with website management including content writing and editing

·          Assist in management of photography and videography programs including planning and coordinating with contract photographers and videographers, managing photo and video library, and distributing requested files

·          Evaluate projects and citizen engagement through data collection, research and analysis

·          Actively participate in new and emerging technology initiatives across the Town

·          Perform other job-related tasks as required


Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or related field, and a minimum of three years relevant, professional experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Thorough knowledge of marketing principles, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of social media platforms and best practice principles; thorough knowledge of personal computers and related software; thorough knowledge of the internet and its use as a marketing/communications tool. Thorough knowledge of English grammar and composition as well as the principles of creative writing, writing arguments, journalism, layout, and writing for the web; Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of public relations and journalistic composition; thorough knowledge of state laws and requirements regarding public records, open meetings; considerable knowledge of the requirements, policies and procedures of various news media outlets; general knowledge of state and federal laws regarding speech, copyright, trademark, and defamation; Knowledge of publishing techniques, including the editorial, graphic design, style, and production aspects of publishing.


 Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at once and prioritize as needed; Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to collaborate and communicate with people in a variety of roles across multiple departments and leadership levels; Ability to think creatively and strategically; Ability to use marketing and communications to enhance and deliver messages to target audiences; Ability to compile, organize and analyze information and present in concise format; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
